KNAER is thrilled to announce the launch of the
Knowledge Network for Student Well-Being (KNSWB)

Building on its history of research and knowledge mobilization, the Hamilton Wentworth District School Board (HWDSB) has established a partnership with the Offord Centre for Child Studies at McMaster University and four exceptional organizations to establish communities of practice aligned with the four key components of Ontario’s well-being strategy. These organizations include:

School Mental Health ASSIST

PREVNet

The Social Planning Network of Ontario

Ontario Healthy Schools Coalition

School Mental Health ASSIST, led by Dr. Kathy Short, will lead the Positive Mental Health community of practice. Promoting Relationships and Eliminating Violence Network (PREVNet), led by Dr. Debra Peplar and Dr. Wendy Craig, will lead the Safe and Accepting Schools community of practice. The Social Planning Network of Ontario will lead the community of practice for Equity and Inclusive Education. And the Ontario Healthy Schools Coalition will lead the Healthy Schools community of practice.

Ontario is leading the way with this unique brand of collaboration and knowledge sharing. Working with established researchers and professionals in a range of fields, the network will connect front-line educators to the most up-to-date research about student well-being, and promote evidence-based practices.

This work will align with the four areas of focus in the ministry’s Well-Being Strategy: Safe and Accepting Schools, Equity and Inclusive Education, Positive Mental Health and Healthy Schools.

Ontario Education Well-Being Strategy:  http://www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/about/WBdiscussionDocument.pdf

Guiding Principles and Objectives:

  • We believe that wellness in education is a multi-faceted concept that includes individual, community, and broader societal factors. Promoting well-being in education goes beyond the promotion of any particular practice or body of evidence and requires a broad, integrated view of wellness.
  • Connect researchers who are interested in aspects of student well-being to front-line educators in order to:
    • help researchers understand the context in which well-being is imbedded in schools,
    • assist in the development and trial of knowledge products flowing from current research by providing opportunities for educators to be involved,
    • promote research and knowledge mobilization across all schools.
  • Connect front-line educators, school administrators and other support staff with researchers in student well-being in order to:
    • help educators, school administrators and other support staff to identify, understand, and implement best practices in student well-being,
    • identify educator problems of practice and topics of interest in student well-being and connect with researchers who might develop and share knowledge in these topics.
    • promote research and knowledge mobilization across all schools.

Communities of Practice topic areas:

  1. Positive mental health
  2. Healthy schools
  3. Safe and accepting schools
  4. Equitable and inclusive education
