Brief Background:
This research project will synthesize the frameworks on identity development trajectories related to Deaf youth in mainstreamed settings developed for the Ministry of Children and Youth Services, disseminate the research, and effect change within the education system.
Research Context:
Over 4,300 Deaf students (JK to Grade 12) currently attend schools in Ontario. Less than 350 or 8% of all Deaf students attend the Ontario Provincial Schools for Deaf students. Ninety-seven per cent of Deaf students attending local public school board programs are in oral education programs (Malkowski, 2011). With this large proportion of Deaf students mainstreamed as a cultural minority group within school board programs in Ontario, the issue of minority identity development becomes particularly pertinent.
Knowledge Mobilization Activities:
This project will mobilize knowledge in six ways. It will: (1) establish new or strengthened partnerships and build a network dedicated to Deaf cultural identity development; (2) publish a monograph related to Deaf identity development; (3) provide a provincial workshop on the topic; (4) establish a webinar/knowledge dissemination section on the Deaf Culture Centre website; (5) create a subsection on Dr. James Cote’s blog related to Deaf identity development; and (6) leverage social media.

The monograph that is published will be available for free online. Its existence builds on the “Barrier Free Education” materials created by the Canadian Hearing Society. The workshop will invite experts on identity development and establishing Deaf Cultural Space in educational environments to provide a forum for interaction among researchers, educators, and policy-makers. The webinar/ knowledge dissemination section on the Deaf Culture Centre website will be established to broadcast the identity development workshop and materials for those who cannot attend, and serve as an ongoing outlet to broadcast additional webinars and share materials on the topic. The site will be linked from deafculturecentre.ca as well as Dr. Cote’s blog. Social media will be leveraged through the Deaf Culture Centre’s established Facebook and Twitter pages to facilitate ongoing dialogue.

The last four items (the new workshop, new webinar, subsection on Dr. Cote’s blog, and social media) will collectively build a network dedicated to Deafhood – Deaf cultural identity development. This strengthened network of researchers, educators, policy makers, and Deaf culturalmembers of the community with a particular interest in Deaf identity development will not only continue to expand the knowledge base in Ontario, Canada and beyond through social media, but will also be in position in the schools and institutions of higher education and government to implement recommendations related to Deaf identity in the schools.
Outcomes:
The long-term goal is to impact teachers, educators, university professors, instructors and other professionals who work with or will work with Deaf students as well as policymakers who have a large impact on the educational environment of Deaf students. This partnership will bring research on the role of Deaf cultural space to the foreground in mainstream educational settings.
