A Tribute to Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences Congress is an initiative of the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences. This year Congress 2015 was help at the University of Ottawa, May 30 to June 5.

What is Congress?

Congress is a conference spanning seven days in late May and early June, and attracts an average of 8,000 attendees. It is organized by the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences and hosted by a different Canadian university each year. Unrivaled in scope and impact, the annual Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences is the convergence of approximately 70 scholarly associations , each holding their annual conference under one umbrella.

Now in its 84th year, this flagship event is much more than Canada’s largest gathering of scholars across disciplines. Congress brings together academics, researchers, policy-makers, and practitioners to share findings, refine ideas, and build partnerships that will help shape the Canada of tomorrow.

What to find at Congress?

Apart from each association hosting multiple paper presentation, poster displays, round tables, the Congress offers a variety of special events including the Big Thinking speaker series, Career Corner, Expo, the Interdisciplinary Symposia, the cultural activities and President’s receptions.

Career Corner is a professional development workshop series where everyone from graduate students to established faculty members can learn how to advance their academic careers, publish and market their research, improve their lesson planning and teaching skills and find out about careers outside of academia. The workshops are free and open to all Congress attendees.

Congress Expo is a place to connect with leading community partners, discover remarkable literary works, and network with the best and brightest scholarly minds from across the country and beyond. There were over 50 exhibitor booths and many were giving away great little take-home gifts.

Interdisciplinary Symposia is a series of events organized and sponsored by the Office of the Vice-President Research at the University of Ottawa and the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences. It is designed to explore novel interdisciplinary research activities being conducted on issues of national and global importance in the social sciences and humanities.
